European Rail Travel,

Planned Properly

There is something about arriving at the centre of a great city by train that feels like the correct way to travel.

The landscape itself becomes the destination.

The Journey is the Destination

Why European Rail Beats Short-Haul Flying?

City Centre to City Centre

No Airport Delays

The Landscape Is the Journey

Lower Environmental Impact

Four Reasons European Rail Beats Short-Haul Flying

  • City centre to city centre: Every major European city was built around its railway station — steps from the finest hotels. Airports are typically 45–60 minutes from the centre.

  • No airport theatre: Arrive 15 minutes before departure. No check-in queues, no security, no baggage carousels. Step onto the train and watch Europe pass by.

  • The landscape is the journey: The Glacier Express traverses 291 bridges and 91 tunnels through the Swiss Alps. The Bernina Express climbs to 2,253 metres above sea level. These cannot be replicated at 35,000 feet.

  • Lower environmental impact: European high-speed rail produces approximately 6 times less CO₂ per passenger kilometre than short-haul aviation.

Six Essential European Rail Journeys

The Glacier Express — Switzerland's most famous journey:

St. Moritz → Zermatt (or reverse) — 7.5 hours

The world's slowest express train, a description that is affectionate, not critical. The train winds at an unhurried pace through 291 bridges, 91 tunnels and some of the most spectacular alpine scenery on earth. The route passes through the Rhine Gorge, over the Oberalp Pass at 2,033 metres, and through the heart of the Goms valley. First-class panoramic seats and the optional Excellence Class dining car make this a genuinely luxury experience.

The Bernina Express — a UNESCO World Heritage Railway:

Chur → St. Moritz → Tirano, Italy — 4 hours

The Bernina Express traverses the highest railway crossing in the Alps without a tunnel or rack system — earning UNESCO World Heritage status. The line climbs to 2,253 metres above sea level at the Ospizio Bernina and crosses the Landwasser Viaduct, one of the most photographed railway structures in the world.

Paris to Milan — through the Mont Blanc tunnel:

Paris Gare de Lyon → Turin → Milan Centrale — 6 hours

The Paris to Milan TGV/Frecciarossa service passes through the 11.6km Mont Blanc tunnel — connecting France and Italy beneath the highest mountain in the Alps. Departing from the Gare de Lyon with its famous Le Train Bleu brasserie and arriving at the architecturally imposing Milan Centrale is a rail journey with theatre at both ends.

Rome to Venice — the Italian showcase:

Roma Termini → Florence SMN → Venice Santa Lucia — 3.5 hours

The high-speed Frecciarossa between Rome and Venice stops at Florence — allowing easy options in three of Italy's greatest cities in a single linear journey. Arriving at Venice Santa Lucia station and stepping out directly onto the Grand Canal is one of the great arrival experiences in European travel.

Zurich to Interlaken — gateway to the Swiss Alps:

Zurich HB → Bern → Interlaken Ost — 2 hours

The journey passes through Bern, Switzerland's understated federal capital, before descending into the Bernese Oberland and the resort town of Interlaken — framed between the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. From Interlaken, the Jungfraujoch railway climbs to the highest railway station in Europe at 3,454 metres.

London to Edinburgh — the East Coast Main Line:

London King's Cross → Edinburgh Waverley — 4.5 hours

The East Coast Main Line passes through York, Durham (with its cathedral and castle visible from the train) and the Northumberland coast before crossing the Firth of Forth into Edinburgh. For HTT clients visiting both London and Edinburgh, the train is almost always preferable to the short-haul flight.
